Named after Captain George Vancouver, a British explorer Vancouver is a coastal city and major seaport located in the Lower Mainland of southwestern British Columbia. Vancouver is the largest metropolitan area in Western Canada and the third largest in the country. The city's estimated population is approx. 615,473 and that of the metropolitan area, 2,318,200. The 2010 Winter Olympics and 2010 Winter Paralympics will be held in Vancouver and the nearby Whistler, a mountain town and ski resort 125 km north of the city. The City of Vancouver has been ranked as one of the most livable cities in the world. Motto: "By Sea, Land, and Air We Prosper"
